2017 – Message

Web

Just returned from our 36th National Saamtrek which was held at the Aldam Resort just outside Ventersburg in the Freestate, once again a very successful event and those that attended it enjoyed it thoroughly. If you missed this year – do not worry, there will be another and another, those that have not attended one, I don’t know what the reason is but you are missing out big time. It is a great weekend, with great company and beautiful examples of classic and more modern Volvo’s. Being held once a year gives you more than enough time to plan, budget and save.

Congrats to all the winners and second places, you worked hard to get your Volvo ready for the judging and there were some great examples. I eventually took my 67 P220 down after buying it 11 years ago! The furthest it travelled since 2006. It ran sweetly and some small tweaks and things to sort out and it will be done. Brings one great satisfaction to save an oldie from the scrapyard and rusting away, and giving it a second lease in life and it will probably still be around long after I have left this earth.

So my 2017 message? With 2017 on it’s back I wish you a blessed festive season ahead, I wish you many happy miles in your Volvo, I wish you good health, happiness and success. And if you are not a member yet, join the Club and come see for yourself what we are about.

Be good and keep that rubber on the tar!

2015 – Message

Web

It is 5 September 2015 outside the rain is falling softly and tomorrow we have our 3rd Spring Bring & Braai and on the one hand I hope that the weather clears and that we have a great day tomorrow, on the other hand we also need the rain after a dry winter. I was supposed be preparing my 1800S for tomorrow…you can’t wash a car in the rain – or you can if you wanted to. My Dad always said rather a wet clean car than a wet dirty car!

It has been more than a year that our new website is up and running and we try to keep it as up to date as possible, what makes it nice is that content can be changed by us. What is a bit concerning is that we have the Members Gallery where Club members can have their story published with photos – all one needs to do is to write something, select a few photies and email it to me or to Eddy…and we will make sure it is put up and there for the whole world to see and admire! Long gone are the days where we put our Volvo’s in a barn and lock it up…and lock our stories away in the deepest parts of our memories and the day we pass on, it is lost forever and many years later someone makes a barn find and gone are your Volvo’s! Keep the memory alive by sharing it.

From a Club point of view we are doing fine, not growing from a membership point of view, pretty stable numbers over the last few years. This is of some concern as what we see happening is members not renewing their membership for some reason and new people joining, had those stayed that “left” us, we would be growing. 2015 saw 24 new members join the Club, we have about 17 2014 members that did not renew.

We also enjoy support from Volvo Cars South Africa and some of the dealerships which is really fantastic, this just goes to show that they have a keen interest in the heritage of Volvo and we the Club, we are the guardians/ custodians of that heritage. This year we were invited to display our classic Volvos at 3 XC90 launches! We have been invited to display a classic Volvo at every track day that is held at Zwartkops Raceway. Our members have further been involved in TWO movies already and a third one is being filmed later this year where we have been invited to provide a LDH classic Volvo. Members Volvo’s have been in at least 3 maybe 4 TV adverts, the latest one the Momentum ad that is running on TV with a nice bright yellow 850R wagon! The best is that our members who provide the cars are compensated handsomely – just goes to show that the Club does benefit a member in other ways as well. I often get questions, what do I get out of it, do I get discount…and and. People need to learn that before you can receive you need to give. Membership per annum – costs slightly more than one bottle of Bells (yes ONE). Dinner for two at the Spur will cost you more.

May you experience spring in your life, renewed energy and a hippity hop in your step. Until next time. Loggies signing off.

2014 – Message

Deon-van-Loggerenberg

I am writing this while we are working on the new website!

I am learning how to edit pages and add text and pictures! And what you see has taken many hours from the new developer and myself – we have been loading content and photos! I hope you like this as mush as I do and I am so happy that we have this great new website, still sponsored by our dear friends Vic & Gerhard Campher from Tom Campher Motors.

What I like the MOST is that I don’t have to send any requests for changes such as loading the membership form and then WAIT SIX months and then get told that we will be charged R350 PLUS VAT! And then with this site I load the membership form with exactly 4 clicks of the mouse and took me 5 seconds flat – R350 plus VAT for that? That means this person’s hourly rate is like R4200 per hour – most expensive lawyer I had to consult on a labour matter was R3500 per hour and he is GOOD and his turnaround time is a day or less. And when I brought this to the attention of the person at the time they refused to deal with me which was very frustrating.

We have NO unwanted ADS on our site either what a pleasure and when I raised this and posted a notice on the site that we did not ask for this, I was blocked out of editing the old site completely fortunately by then we had decided to move and do something fresh which is what you see here. A complete new look with all our old content plus more new content!

Go check out the Club News section – you can now download previous newsletters! To load it 4 clicks and no charge :)))). And there is more coming! We have a members section – you can now register and then download directly to the gallery! The hosting costs us a minimal fee per month but all worth it as we have a lot more functionality, we don’t have a 6 month turnaround time. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

It is June the first cold front has hit us and my fingers are like sticks of ice while typing this! On the history page you will see some photos (and more coming) of the first years of the Club, we will also be putting up some old brochures and more. We need your contributions/ photos and stories. Lets go big ‘cos no one is going to go home. Enjoy.

2012 – Message

Wow – how quickly time goes by, the end of 2012 has arrived. Looking back over 2012 we have had good times and sad times, a few members have passed away over the year and we will surely miss them. We have had many good events and the most memorable would be the Netherlands Southern Africa Expedition when 14 Volvos arrived in Cape Town earlier this year.

We have had great support from our sponsors and also had another very successful Saamtrek. 2013 promises to be a great year. So with this I wish you all well over the festive season, travel safely and rest well. If you are not going anywhere – take care and rest well. See you all in the New Year!

2011 – Message

And so we have come to the end of 2011 and Christmas and the New Year is upon us!

I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who has contributed to our success as a CLub this year and I know that going into 2012 you will be there. We have had a great year and made many new friends.

Those of you you who will be going on holiday, please take care, drive safely and enjoy the break and rest well. Those of you staying at home, well mow the lawn, do some painting, clean your Volvo and make sure it is ready for 2012, and also take care.

May you all have a blessed Christmas, and may 2012 be one helluva great and beautiful year!

Message FOUR:

2011 is already at the end of it’s 4th month, oh how time flies! Well so far we have a great year and we have had our fair deal of good fortune! The events so far have turned up a decent attendance, can get better though! See our resources page for a very interesting link to YOU TUBE on Braam du Plessis’ amazing 1969 122S at the Top Gear Festival, we have been invited to display some Volvos at the 2011 Rand Show, and invited by Volvo Cars South Africa to attend a Performance Day at Kyalami. The Walk to Vryheid is coming up and we are all looking forward to that event. We also aim to see if we can get 50 1800’s at the Saamtrek, and appeal to ALL members/ non members to please help to achieve this.

Message THREE:

I am currently sitting a Hotel room in Ghana up in West Africa, updating bits and pieces of the website, realising that we are just under two months away from the 2010 National Saamtrek, this year has seen it’s challenges and 2011 lays ahead. Firstly as you can see one of our stalwarths in the Club has had a multiple heart bypass surgery, we wish him well! Our display at CMH is rolling on and currently we have Edries Ali’s immaculate 164 on display.

Volvo Cars South Africa has just agreed to sponsor our newsletter for another year, fantastic! So there is alot of good and encouraging news for the Club.

Next year sees that 50th anniversary of the P1800, now this is something we have to get going, if you see a P1800/1800S/1800E/1800ES get the detail we want it as we really want to make this anniversary a BIGGGGG one! If you have contacts in the media, USE THEM. if you can get onto TV GET there! We really want to MAKE THIS EVENT BIG! So please help us so that we can truly celebrate the anniversary of a TRUE legend, a car superior to the….well can I be brave….and say superior to the….you take your pick, one great motor car and a true classic an legend.

Message TWO:

We have just returned from our 2009 National Saamtrek and the entire committee was reelected, we appreciate the vote of confidence and remain committed to take the Club to further heights. Things are working well, but I think we need to create new challenges and reach higher. I always say that the Club is there for the members, they are the most important and without them the Club does not exist. The key to success of any initiative is being involved.

We look forward to a blessed 2010, the Christmas Holidays are upon us and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. May 2010 prove to be your best year, those of you travelling do so safely in the safest motor car in the world. Look after yourselves and rest well. See you in the New Year and our many activities enjoy life!

I thought of removing the piece below I wrote for the website when it was launched, hey but why should I? So I leave it here for all to see and read..again and again….

Message ONE:

When I joined the Volvo Club in 2004 I started getting involved and made up my mind to make a difference, you see in life you have a choice you can be a passenger and just come along for the ride or you can decide to do some of the driving yourself. As we are all human I saw and picked up a few things that I thought should be changed and instead of moaning and groaning I got involved and changed the things I could and still struggle to accept those things I cannot change.

And this is my message to all members, guys and gals, you dont have to get involved big time or full time or in a big way, no not at all, you need to involve yourself where you feel you can contribute postively, be positive and not negative and when you do feel criticism is necessary do it constructively and positively, and even better come with a solution which is better than the one in place. We are always open to practical workable solutions which is to the benefit to the majority of our membership.

Making a difference requires a will and tenacity, will power and patience, it wont change overnight and those things we cannot change the courage to accept it and move on. We are not here for our own benefit, we are here to benefit each other, there is an ancient law that says you can only receive when you give, so if you are only here to receive and not to give I am afraid you are knocking on the wrong door. None of us are here for our own benefit alone, we are a camaraderie of Volvo owners there for each other!

The Club has done well over the last number of years due to the hard work of many members, former committee members and chairmen and we cannot let all that hardwork go to waste, we need to continue as friends, enthusiasts and fellow Volvo owners to make the Club work. I cant do it on my own, my committee cant do it on their own we need you all to push, pull, contribute and make it work.

Get InVOLV(O)ED

On another note we are extremely excited to have this new website, thanks to Tom Campher Volvo (Vic and Gerhard Campher) who are no strangers in the Volvo world nor in the Club! We are excited to have them as members, that says something of the them as Volvo enthusiasts as well as their confidence in the Club – thanks guys!
