National Saamtrek 2008 – On Friday 24 October 2008 61 members of the Volvo Club of SA from all over the country took to the roads of South Africa towards Maselspoort Holiday Resort just outside Bloemfontein, where we have been getting together once a year for the last three years.
The biggest change was that there was no Currie Cup final in Bloemfontein, not that it changed anything as many of the guys were glued to the TV when the Sharks and the Blue Bulls played in Durban.
The resort was booked out (again!) 61 members attended that AGM held on Saturday morning, and over a 120 people attended the Prize Giving dinner. The quality of the Volvos on show as excellent and the competition a lot stiffer – one reason being that there was a loose cloud out of nowhere that dropped a bit of rain! Just enough to make clean cars look dirty and good girls look naughty!
And if there was a prize for the most unusual Volvo on the show it would have gone to Fred Eksteen with his 122 Cross Country AWD…. B20 motor, Volvo gearbox, 122 wagon body on top of a we wont say what chassis…
Honorary Life membership was awarded to Theo Tamsen, one of the original founders of the Club, at over 70 he attends as many gatherings as he can, and he hasn’t missed a Saamtrek since we can remember – a true example. He is also one of 6 members that still have their Volvos from new!
